What a Matching PFP Actually Is
A matching PFP (profile picture) is a pair of avatars — usually two, sometimes more — that are designed to be seen as a set. The obvious use case is a couple who both set the same coordinated pair, one avatar each. Best-friend duos, gaming clans, streaming co-hosts, and podcast pairs all use them the same way. The visual read is: these two people go together.
The interesting design problem is that "matching" is not just about picking similar images. Two portraits from different photo shoots, cropped generously, will still look mismatched because the zoom, the center offset, and the aspect the subjects fill the frame at will all be slightly different. A matching PFP cropper's real job is not the crop itself — it is preserving those settings so the second crop uses exactly the same values as the first.
Two Source Modes for Matching PFPs
There are two common ways to create a matching pair, and the workflow is slightly different for each.
Mode 1: Two separate photos of two separate people
Most common use case. Each person has their own portrait (a couple's individual photos, two friends' selfies, two streamers' headshots). You crop each one to a 512×512 avatar and the pair works because you kept the composition consistent.
Best results come from source photos that are already visually consistent: shot at roughly the same distance from the subject, similar lighting, similar background style. Two selfies taken with the same phone in the same room in one afternoon match better than two archived photos from different years.
Mode 2: One wide artwork split into halves
Common for illustrated or commissioned matching PFPs — an artist draws one wide piece where the composition spans across two panels, and each half becomes one person's avatar. In this mode, load the wide artwork once, crop the left half, download, then crop the right half of the same file and download that too. The tool keeps both crops locked to the same aspect and zoom automatically because you are working with one image.
Step-by-Step Matching PFP Workflow
- Decide on your mask. Circle for Discord and Instagram (where the platform will mask into a circle anyway), square for TikTok or print use. Both partners should use the same mask.
- Load the first source. Drop the first person's photo (or the left half of a wide artwork) onto the upload area.
- Frame it. Position the subject with about 15% padding around the face. Note the zoom level and where the subject sits in the frame — you will need to match this on the second crop.
- Press Start Cropping. Download the first PNG.
- Load the second source. Drop the second person's photo (or reload the wide artwork).
- Match the framing. Position the second subject at the same zoom, and put their eye-line at the same horizontal position as the first subject. This is the critical step — a difference of a few pixels shows up when the two avatars sit side by side in a chat.
- Press Start Cropping again. Download the second PNG.
- Test them together. Open both files side by side in a preview tool. Do the subjects feel like a pair? If one is noticeably larger, tighter, or higher in the frame than the other, recrop.
Composition Rules for a Matching PFP
Match the eye-line. The single strongest signal that two avatars belong together is that the subjects' eyes fall on the same horizontal line. Everything else — background, lighting, expression — is negotiable. The eye-line is not.
Match the subject size. The face should take up roughly the same percentage of each circle. If one person's face fills 70% of the circle and the other fills 50%, the pair looks off even if both crops look fine on their own.
Mirror or complement the pose. A classic matching PFP has the two subjects facing slightly toward each other — subject one looking a little to the right, subject two looking a little to the left. If both subjects face straight at the camera, the pair reads more like "two individual avatars" than "a matched pair," which is fine but less impactful.
Coordinate the background color. Two portraits with wildly different background colors read as separate, not paired. If you can, shoot or edit the backgrounds to be the same color or complementary colors.
Coordinate the clothing tone. This is subtle but visible. Two subjects in matching or complementary clothing colors immediately read as a pair. This is one reason "couple photoshoot" packages usually include an outfit-coordination step.
Matching PFPs on Specific Platforms
Discord. Both partners should upload circle-mode PNGs. Note that Discord shows a status ring on the bottom-right of each avatar — for a matching pair you want both status bubbles to sit in symmetrical empty space, which means both subjects should have similar bottom-right padding in their crops.
Instagram. Instagram displays avatars as circles, so use circle mode. Both partners should also coordinate their bios or grid posts if they are going all-in on the matching aesthetic — a matching PFP on its own reads as a nice touch; a matching PFP plus coordinated bios plus coordinated post grids reads as intentional.
X (Twitter). Circle in the feed, square on the profile page. Use circle mode so the pair works in feeds; the square view on the profile is a bonus.
TikTok. Rounded-square mask. Use square mode. TikTok's own rounded corners will apply automatically.
Do You Need a "Matching PFP Cropper App"?
Search suggestions often show "matching pfp cropper app" — presumably because people expect an installable mobile app. You do not need one. This web tool works the same on mobile as it does on desktop, and it does not require installation from an app store, does not want your location, does not need permission to see your photos beyond the one you pick, and does not push notifications at you. If you are on a phone, tap the upload area and pick a photo from your camera roll. The rest of the workflow is identical.
The main practical advantage of a web tool over a native app for this specific job: you can crop, download, and upload to Discord or Instagram in the same browser session without switching apps. On a phone with a lot of apps installed, that continuity is worth something.
Privacy in a Multi-Photo Workflow
A matching PFP workflow involves two source photos — often photos of two different people, which raises real privacy questions if the tool is uploader-based. This tool is not. Both photos are processed entirely inside your browser tab. Neither photo is uploaded to us or to any third party. When you press Start Cropping on the first photo, the download comes from your browser's canvas API, not a server. When you load the second photo, the first one is discarded from memory. Nothing is retained between crops.
This is worth mentioning specifically because when the crop involves someone else's photo — your partner's, your friend's, a family member's — you are effectively making a privacy decision on their behalf. Choosing a tool that doesn't upload is a reasonable default when you can't ask them first.
Matching PFP Troubleshooting
"The two avatars don't feel like they match even though I cropped carefully." Nine times out of ten this is an eye-line mismatch. Recrop both so the eyes fall on the exact same horizontal position within the circle. Everything else can be off and the pair will still read; the eye-line cannot.
"One face looks much bigger than the other." Zoom mismatch. If your two source photos were shot at different distances from the camera, one subject's face will be a different size in the original — and that difference carries through to the crop. Zoom in on the smaller face until it fills the same fraction of the frame as the larger face.
"The backgrounds don't match." If you cannot reshoot, you can crop tight enough that only a sliver of background is visible around each subject. A pair of head-and-shoulders crops with minimal background is more forgiving than two wider crops.
"I want to make a matching PFP for three or four people, not two." The workflow scales — crop each person's photo with the same zoom, same eye-line, same padding. There is no hard cap on the number of avatars you can crop consistently. For very large groups it is usually easier to have a designer stitch a composite in Photoshop first, then split.
